Hermes and the Defeat of Argos (String Quartet)

$0.00

At the time when I was writing this piece, I was reading the Odyssey and wanted to write something involving Greek mythology. I settled on the story of Hermes and his encounter with the giant Argos: Hermes, the messenger god, was tasked with rescuing the nymph Lo who had been transformed into a cow by Zeus to protect her from the jealous Hera. Hera however, assigned a giant named Argos Panoptes to watch over Lo. Argos had many eyes, some of which were always awake, making him a nearly impossible guard to escape from. To rescue Lo, Hermes was sent by Zeus. Hermes used his cunning and musical skills to lull Argos to sleep. He played the lyre and told stories, keeping Argos entertained until he finally closed all of his eyes to rest. Once Argos was asleep. Hermes slayed him. Hermes frees Lo, who was later returned to her human form and reunites with Zeus.
